Adelaide has had some really obnoxious hot weather, and what better way to 'enjoy' it then fish and chips and ice cream down at the beach? Hubby and myself rode our bikes from Lockleys to Semaphore planning to try out the infamous Sotos fish and chip shop followed with Copenhagen Ice-cream. unfortunately upon arriving there at lunch time we found Sotos to be closed until 5pm due to hot weather, not to be derailed from our plan of fish and chips we rode back to Henley to what has always been our go to fish and chips, the Stunned Mullet. This fish and chip shop is located near the end of Henley Beach Road away from Henley Square, however it certainly is worth the short walk as the food here is a cut above what's available there. The Stunned Mullet have won several awards and are a family run business, offering not only the usual fish and chip shop range but a variety of coatings/fish types that aren't commonly available at other take aways.
We have been frequenting this place for years (I went to the High School down the road) and we went with our 'usual' order but in a half size (evidently our usual order used to be enough to feed four people, now that I'm a little more nutrition focused I am aware it was just too much of a good thing). So it was a piece of a battered garfish to share, a crumbed sausage for me, two dim sims for hubby and the smallest size of chips, and honestly this was plenty for lunch between two. We were the only people ordering so it took the whole of maybe ten minutes for our food to be ready, wrapped up and we were back on the bikes to eat down at the Square. Unwrapping our food it smelt amazing, no oily or 'fried' smell, and as usual nothing disappointed. The garfish was so fresh, the fillet itself was flaky and tender and the batter crispy and golden. The chips were super chunky, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and in no way oily or soggy. Hubby's dim sims were pretty stock standard but again had been drained well and were cooked 'just right'. My crumbed sausage again was pretty standard but these are an all time favourite food of mine from when I lived in the UK, The Stunned Mullet's always hit the spot with a good crispy crumb coating and a juicy, tender sausage.
If you in the area this is my pick of fish and chips, if your not in the area...it's worth the trip. The people working here are friendly, the service is quick, the range is good and everything is fresh and delicious. I think the Stunned Mullet will always be my favourite due to a combination of nostalgia and consistently good food.

And to end a great lunch...one has to have some great ice cream. Copenhagen at Henley Square delivered as per usual. My waffle basket of cookie peanut butter caramel, macadamia white chocolate and banana and hubby's almond and bailys, mint choc chip and salted caramel were both divine on a scorching hot day, and as expected rich, creamy and generously sized! The standout for me was the banana flavour, it was something new for me but the flavour was so intense and sweet that I will certainly be having it again! Service as always was with a smile despite the place being jam packed, and pretty much all flavours were still available despite the heatwave. I think the staff here coped really well! Copenhagen are still definitely one of my favourite ice cream places in Adelaide.
